Support Group - Mental Illness

Sunday, January 7, 2018 20 Tevet 5778

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Psalm 42 suggests the real-life manifestation of mental illness and the confusion it imparts. “My tears have been my food, day and night…why is my soul so downcast, why am I so disquieted?” (Psalm 42:4,12) The authors of our ancient texts observed the human reality of depression, and they hoped that acknowledging this fact would be of help and comfort.

In our day, the reality of depression and mental illness challenges us as we reach out to our friends and family members so afflicted, to allow them to live free of many of the constraints they encounter. This is a goal that we share as a community, and that Temple Beth El is beginning to address.

Temple Beth El is beginning a process to create a support group for those whose lives have been affected through mental illness. Intended for individuals or families, the hope is to address issues faced by families who face chronic situations and acute incidents. The intention is to have this group facilitated by mental health experts, and coordinated by Rabbi Biatch.

The first of a few confidential organizing meetings will take place on Sunday, January 7, from 10 – 11 am at Temple Beth El. Led by Rabbi Biatch, he will listen to your concerns and begin to explore ways that he and other experts in the Madison area can offer support to our members. Please RSVP to rabbi@tbemadison.org. Contact Rabbi Biatch if you are interested and cannot attend, so that we are aware of your interest and possible future involvement.
