We Prepare for a Season Different from All Others

Dear Friends,

I write today to describe ways in which our New Year observances will be different this year. During coming season of repentance, we will be challenged to learn, engage in self-inspection, pledge personal change, offer forgiveness to those who request it, and strive to make our lives better in new ways.

Yet Jews have always shown resiliency in the face of challenges, and at Temple Beth El, our intention is to pursue our High Holy Day worship and programming during the ongoing pandemic with as much passion and intention as we have in the past.

As the High Holy Day prayer above implies, we possess the authority to transform our annual Days of Awe into personally renewing and world-changing events. Despite the coronavirus, we can move toward the High Holy Days with optimism and positive anticipation, searching for ways to give new meaning to our lives. I encourage us to take every opportunity to make these days meaningful for us and for those we love.

Together, we will engage in a process of transformation through the observance of eight Jewish holidays leading up to and including the High Holy Days.

17th of Tammuz: July 8–9, 2020
STEP 1: INTROSPECTION AND INNER REFLECTION
Only when we reflect on our actions carefully can we truly become aware of how we’ve “missed the mark” in the past.

Tishah B'Av: July 29–30, 2020
STEP 2: CONFESSION AND PERSONAL/INDIVIDUAL REBUKE
“They who cover up their faults will not succeed. They who confess and leave them behind will find mercy” (Proverbs 28:13).

Rosh Chodesh Elul: August 21, 2020
STEP 3: REPENTANCE AND ATONEMENT
To repent is to feel remorse or self-reproach for the transgressions one has done or things one has failed to do, to the point where the regret is strong enough to change one’s mind or point of view.

S'lichot: September 12, 2020
STEP 4: REJECTION OF REPEATED SIN
Repentance is considered to be efficacious only when people learn from their mistakes and refrain when confronted with an opportunity to do the same wrong deed again.

Rosh Hashanah: September 18–19, 2020
STEP 5: FORGIVENESS
When we are granted forgiveness, the one we have wronged has renounced anger and resentment toward us, we have been absolved from any further retribution for our wrongdoing, and we are thereby freed from the consequences of our error.

Yom Kippur: September 27–28, 2020
STEP 6: RENEWAL AND TRANSFORMATION
T’shuvah—return—asks who we will become in the future. While couched mainly in the language of petition and supplication, the prayers of forgiveness ask for the strength to change, to renew and transform ourselves into a better version. In the words of Psalm 51:12: “Create a pure heart for me, O God; renew in me a steadfast spirit.”

Sukkot: October 2–3, 2020
STEP 7: DEDICATION
We dedicate a new dwelling filled with the reminders of a rich harvest.

Simchat Torah: October 9–10, 2020
STEP 8: CELEBRATION
We celebrate the personal transformation to new ways of life.

For this coming holiday season, we will host inspiring and uplifting worship online. You and your family will have options of participating in conveniently scheduled online worship and study times through either interactive or livestreaming platforms.

We will hear familiar sounds of the holidays, from the blasts of the shofar to Kol Nidrei, from Yizkor to Vidui (Confession). We will recognize with our entire being that these holidays have arrived despite the different setting of our worship. Together, we will transform our home viewing areas to places of sanctity and refuge. Not even this virus will prevent us from observing these special days with joy and meaning.

Today, July 9, or the 17th day of Tammuz, is the first of two significant historical markers for the upcoming High Holy Day season.

On this day in 586 BCE, the walls of Jerusalem were broken by the attacking Babylonian army, and the battle for the heart of the kingdom of Judah began in earnest. And on the 9th of Av (July 30, 2020), we will mark the day when, in that same fateful year, Jerusalem burned, and the residents of Judah were taken captive and exiled to Babylon.

The period between these two solemn occasions is known as the Three Weeks of Retribution or Affliction, when we recall the prophetic rebuke of the sins of the ancient Israelites that, in the eyes of the rabbis, brought about the destruction and Babylonian exile. Those sins included the Israelites’ following the letter of the law of Torah but not its spiritual essence: they sacrificed precisely according to the direction of the Temple priests, but they cared nothing for the social and physical needs of the poor.

Six hundred fifty years later, the city of Jerusalem was again destroyed, this time by Rome. The Jewish factions in that era could not coalesce around common goals regarding their Roman host government, and the groups came to loathe one another. This “baseless hatred,” as the Talmudic rabbis admonished, was the sin that destroyed the nation of Israel from within.

1. Cheshbon hanefesh, the “accounting of the soul,” is the process by which we turn inward during the weeks prior to the High Holy Days to assess who we are and what we have done in the past year. Think of a time when you made a cheshbon hanefesh. How did you benefit from this process? What did you learn about yourself that you wouldn’t have learned otherwise?

2. Can one truly repent without being aware of one’s wrongdoing? Why or why not? Why is ignorance considered to be an impediment to repentance?

3. Should people be held accountable for wrongdoings about which they are honestly not aware?

4. What is our responsibility to ourselves and to others regarding our understanding of our own faults and misdeeds?

Join us for these opportunities to prepare spiritually for the holiday season and the year to come.

NEXT STEP: TISHAH B'AV

Erev Tishah B'Av Observance

This summer, we will observe the 9th of Av with a special, renewed worship service. We will recall the historical destructions, but with a contemporary purpose. We will reflect on the prophets’ and rabbis’ views of the people’s shortcomings in ancient times and begin to recognize in ourselves the need for our personal repentance for transgressions in our own day. Through contemplative music and the reading of selections from the book of Lamentations, we will search for better modes of living in this complex world.

Shabbat Worship: Selections from Isaiah

From the 9th of Av through the New Year period, we will reflect on the comforting words of Isaiah, whose Haftarot of Consolation beckon us to peer inside ourselves and not to fall prey to our base emotions. The words of Isaiah will help us find ways to elevate and transform our being.

Cheshbon Hanefesh: An Accounting of Our Souls

During the weeks prior to the High Holy Days, we turn inward as we begin considering ways we have erred, and we anticipate making real change. In this educational session with Rabbi Jonathan Biatch, we contemplate our responsibility to ourselves and others by analyzing our own faults and missteps in life.

Haramat Masa: "Elevating of Our Burden" to Offer Forgiveness

Healing House Meal Volunteers Needed

Healing House provides respite care to persons experiencing homelessness who are recuperating from surgery, illness, or childbirth.
