Honor and Continue the Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

When the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. addressed the American Jewish Congress in May 1958, he explained that “our unity is born of our common struggle for centuries, not only to rid ourselves of bondage, but to make oppression of any people by another an impossibility.”

Jewish tradition is replete with customs and commandments to protect and lift up the underprivileged and the vulnerable. The justice we seek is the same justice that Martin Luther King Jr. sought for his children and the rest of society. Systemic disparities and injustices will endure unless we take proactive steps, individually and as a community, to acknowledge and eliminate them.

The Union for Reform Judaism’s Religious Action Center declares that as Reform Jews we say unequivocally: Black lives matter. To affirm that Black lives matter is to commit to a human and civil rights movement, working to end systemic racism and white supremacy. To affirm that Black lives matter is to recognize that we are a racially diverse Reform Jewish movement and that our diversity is a source of strength.

We will listen to Rabbi Angela Warnick Buchdahl's 2020 Kol Nidre sermon “We Are Family: Rethinking Race in the Jewish Community,” followed by breakout discussion groups on the concept of race, particularly as perceived by Jews toward Jews.

Jews, Music, and the Civil Rights Movement
Sunday, January 17, 10:00–11:30 am • Zoom
In the 1960s, American Jews participated in the Civil Rights Movement alongside African Americans, strengthened by freedom songs based in African American church music. Cantor Jacob Niemi and TBE song leader Les Goldsmith will introduce iconic protest songs and explore how this music crossed racial and religious boundaries to build community. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Youth Call to Service

Middle and high school youth are invited to attend an afternoon of educational and engaging workshops exploring service and activism in Dr. King's memory, in partnership with the City of Madison, Dane County, MSCR, Madison Out of School Time (MOST), Madison Public Library, United Way of Dane County, the Urban League of Greater Madison, and others. Wilkerson, author of “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents” and “The Warmth of Other Suns,” is the first African American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize in journalism. In this Q&A-style event, she will discuss connections and reflections on the messages and life of Martin Luther King Jr. in researching and writing her best-selling book “Caste.” Learn more

Racial Justice Action of the Week
Starting after MLK weekend, your TBE weekly happenings email each Wednesday will include a suggested Racial Justice Action of the Week that you can take as part of your racial justice journey and to help bring racial equity to our greater community. These actions will be in the four categories recommended to us by leaders of Madison’s Black-led organizations: Educate, Participate, Donate, Advocate.

For hundreds of years our country has been building an unjust and unequitable system of racial oppression; undoing it won’t be easy or quick. Knowing where to start or what to do can be overwhelming, so we hope these weekly action ideas will help you.

Our Racial Justice Action Team and Social Action Committee are looking into partnerships and other opportunities for us to engage in the important work of tikkun olam (repair of the world).

Healing House Meal Volunteers Needed
Sunday, May 12th (All day)
Healing House provides respite care to persons experiencing homelessness who are recuperating from surgery, illness, or childbirth. TBE and other congregation volunteers cook meals for the residents and staff on a quarterly basis and drop them off at 5:00 pm each day at Healing House, 303 Lathrop St., Madison, WI 53726. Our team has signed up to provide meals the week of May 12–18. Menu items (not specific recipes) will be assigned to you by Ruth Frawley, our dinner coordinator, the week before.
