We Are Ukraine: An Advocacy Postcard Project in Response to the Crisis in Ukraine

The crisis in Ukraine has increased our compassion for Ukrainian immigrants and, in doing so, opened our hearts to the needs of all refugees, asylum seekers, and other immigrants. Our own Kathy Mazur created a beautiful artwork entitled "We Are Ukraine," which led to a conversation with Rabbi Renee Bauer at Jewish Social Services of Madison about an advocacy postcard project. Inspired by Kathy's artwork for the front of the postcard and suggestions from Rabbi Bauer and HIAS, TBE's Refugee and Immigrant Rights Action Team created text urging our representatives and the Biden administration to support Ukrainian and other refugees and immigrants. 

Come join us for a drop-in event from 7:00 to 8:00 pm on March 31 to sign and address five prewritten postcards to send to our representatives and the Biden administration. We will provide the stamps and addresses. At 7:30 pm, Rabbi Bauer will speak about the inspiration for the artwork and the importance of advocacy. We will also have a Zoom option for those who are unable to make the in-person event. Kathy will join us on Zoom from Tennessee to talk about what moved her to create her beautiful artwork and her hopes that this can lead to action and advocacy. For those of you who can make the in-person event, we are looking forward to seeing your friendly faces, schmoozing, and sharing refreshments. For in-person attendees, please note Temple Beth El's current in-person guidelines (tbemadison.org/inperson), including masks and proof of vaccination. 

If you cannot come that evening and would like to participate in this project, please contact the Temple office to pick up a packet of five postcards with addresses and stamps until April 8. Thank you for your advocacy!
