Book Discussion of “We Are the Weather: Saving the Planet Begins at Breakfast” by Jonathan Safran Foer

Tuesday, November 16, 2021 12 Kislev 5782

7:00 PM - 8:30 PMZoom

Join the Environment and Climate Change Action Team, the Men's Club Book Group, and Sisterhood Book Group for a guided discussion of the book “We Are the Weather: Saving the Planet Begins at Breakfast” by Jonathan Safran Foer.

In his erev Rosh Hashanah sermon, Rabbi Jonathan Biatch drew on this book to deliver a powerful message: Our nature may be to avoid difficult choices, but the time is now to do just that. We will discuss what we found helpful and reflect on whether what the author proposes can drive change in us and/or our communities.

Joel Pedersen will give the opening remarks for our discussion that evening. He just moved to the Johns Hopkins University Department of Environmental Health and Engineering after serving as professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the Departments of Soil Science and of Civil & Environmental Engineering since 2001. Joel runs the Pedersen research group, which conducts research on the impact of pharmaceuticals and personal care products on the food we eat, and on neurogenerative diseases.

Watch Rabbi Biatch's sermon here (or read it here), and watch a brief interview with author Jonathan Safran Foer about his book here.

The book is available at the Madison Public Library in regular and large print, audio, and electronic versions.

At 7:30 pm Men's Club Book Group will adjourn to a separate discussion group.
