9:30 AM - 11:00 AMZoom

Join Reform Jews across Wisconsin to meet with Senator Tammy Baldwin’s office in support of voting rights.

The meeting is on Monday, July 26, with a prep session at 9:30 am and the actual meeting at 10:00 am. Register here: https://urj.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMsd-6orzMqGtXbbzU7TJ4QHebdxqHCejC_

As you may have already seen, our Reform movement through the Union for Reform Judaism’s Religious Action Center (RAC) is deeply engaged in working to enact national standards for voting to ensure that everyone can vote, and every vote is counted. As Reform Jews, our tradition teaches us that we want a transparent process we can trust, where all Americans have equal freedom to vote. That is why we are working to support the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. You can read more background about these two critical voting rights bills here: https://rac.org/issues/racial-justice/racial-justice-campaign/freedom-vote

The bills faced minimal opposition in the House of Representatives. However, these bills face resistance in the U.S. Senate. One important strategy this summer involves direct outreach to Senate offices through virtual lobby visits during July and August.

As the RAC’s lobby meeting coordinator for Wisconsin, TBE member Betsy Abramson has scheduled a virtual meeting with a staffer from Senator Tammy Baldwin’s office on Monday, July 26 at 10:00 am. Now we need to ensure that Reform Jews from all across Wisconsin show up and make our voices heard. The RAC and Betsy are contacting leaders from the other eight Wisconsin Reform congregations so that we will have speakers and attendees from Reform congregations across Wisconsin.

Only a few people will have speaking parts during the planned 30-minute meeting with the senator’s office, and of course we already know that Senator Baldwin is in support of these bills. So, even if you do not have a speaking or coordinating role, we hope you will join the lobby meeting as an attendee. Taking part in lobby meetings as an attendee is a critical way to show our movement's power—a meeting with 500 people on Zoom obviously shows more power than a meeting with 25 people on Zoom even if only some people speak during the meeting. We want to use this time to show Senator Baldwin’s office—through hopefully hundreds of our faces on the screen—that we want Senator Baldwin to work hard to get these bills passed and to make them a major priority.

Once you register to attend, you will be sent the Zoom link for the meeting. Register here: https://urj.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMsd-6orzMqGtXbbzU7TJ4QHebdxqHCejC_

Please invite friends and family from other Jewish congregations in Wisconsin as well as people of other faiths, neighbors, friends, etc. Just make sure they are from Wisconsin (i.e., constituents of Senator Baldwin).

Thanks for considering this important easy way to make our voices heard about this critical issue in our democracy.
