A Shabbat Discussion on Advocacy and the Civil Rights Journey

Friday, June 20, 2025 24 Sivan 5785

7:30 PM - 8:30 PMFrank Adult Lounge

In honor of Juneteenth Day 2025, following our 6:00 pm Shabbat worship, the Racial Justice Action Team of TBE and the Community Relations Committee of the Jewish Federation of Madison will welcome attorney Thomas M. Jacobson for a discussion and Q&A on Civil Rights history and advocacy.

Jacobson escaped Nazi Germany as an infant on the MS St. Louis, eventually arriving in America, where he went on to become one of the leading Jewish Civil Rights lawyers in Milwaukee. He worked side-by-side with civil rights luminaries including Father James Groppi and Lloyd Barbee, and represented Dick Gregory, Michael McGee, and others. In addition, Jacobson argued and won two cases in the US Supreme Court against Wisconsin statutes that had harmed people living in poverty.

He will share stories of his decades of advocacy, as chronicled in his new memoir: Underdog: Against All Odds: The Fight for Justice. Attorney Jacobson will provide comments both at Shabbat services and in this wide-ranging discussion and Q&A session following services.
