Temple Beth El observes the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the "Night of Broken Glass," which terrified German Jews living under increasing threats from the German government. Jewish businesses were looted and torched, synagogues were sacked, and Jews were arrested, including the founding rabbi of Temple Beth El, Rabbi Manfred Swarsensky. Kristallnacht represented an escalation of violence against the Jews of the Third Reich, which led to the imposition of the so-called Final Solution. In song, story, and word, we will remember those killed in the Holocaust. -

A holiday meal is beyond the means of those who struggle to buy weekly groceries. Goodman Community Center is collecting food to help 3,500 families enjoy a Thanksgiving meal with their loved ones. Let’s all help them! You can bring just one item, several items, or best of all, a whole flat of cans or boxes. We are collecting canned fruits and vegetables, cranberry sauce, broth, boxes of mac and cheese, boxes of stuffing, and aluminum roaster pans. Collection bins are in the coatroom. TBE’s Jewish educational program is participating in a grade-level competition! The grade that brings the most of their item will be presented with a certificate for a tree planted in Israel. 4K & kindergarten—boxes of macaroni and cheese 1st grade—boxes of stuffing 2nd grade—aluminum roaster pans 3rd grade—cans of fruit 4th grade—cans of vegetables 5th grade—broth, any kind 6th—cans of cranberry sauce 7th grade—gravy Collection deadline is 10 am on Sunday, November 18. Items will be counted that morning and then delivered to the Goodman Community Center’s Fritz Food Pantry. To find out which grade donated the most, join the Religious School Song Circle on December 2, where our Mitzvah Core students will announce the winning grade! Don’t have time to shop? Goodman Community Center is also collecting monetary donations at www.goodmancenter.org (note Thanksgiving food drive) to help them buy turkeys and other perishable items. Our participation in this food drive is a partnership of the TBE Social Action Committee and Religious School. -

Susan Weinberg, an author and artist from Minneapolis, will speak about her book, We Spoke Jewish: A Legacy in Stories, based on oral history interviews. We Spoke Jewish explores the three waves of Jewish immigrants to the United States in the 20th century. Through artwork and oral history, it tells the stories of the Jews of early immigrant communities, the Holocaust survivors who came after the war, and the immigrants from the former Soviet Union who came in the latter part of the century. What does it mean to “speak Jewish”? The phrase is often used to describe the Yiddish language, and among Eastern European Jews in the early part of the century, virtually everyone spoke Jewish. Many subsequent immigrants spoke Jewish in different ways. Survivors spoke the Jewish of remembrance, carrying the memory of once thriving Jewish communities and the people who populated them. Immigrants from the former Soviet Union could not openly practice Judaism, but they spoke the Jewish of culture, carrying their heritage forward through song, food, and, of course, story. We Spoke Jewish explores how these three groups spoke Jewish through language, memory, and culture, forming an important part of Jewish identity. -

Rekindle your Judaism through ritual, study, and social action in the monthly Chai Mitzvah course, facilitated by Nicole A. Jahr, RJE. This course builds and deepens Jewish connections within the congregation and community. In this special version of the course focused on business ethics, you'll explore some of our tradition's teachings related to business and commerce. Often, we fragment our lives into religious and secular, confining Judaism to the home and synagogue. This dichotomy between religious and work lives is alien to Judaism because derech eretz, the way we walk in this world, is a form of Jewish expression. Indeed, Jewish law and ethics have much to say about the world of business and commerce. Over 100 mitzvot relate to commerce and business, even more than the number devoted to the laws of kashrut. Chai Mitzvah has five basic components in a nine-month program: • Group study - meeting monthly, with a text-based curriculum (you can see samples of the topics at www.chaimitzvah.org, under "Curriculum" • Personal study - design your own independent study on a topic of personal interest to you, looking at Jewish life, history, major figures, literature, culture, or other areas of interest • Adopt a ritual/spiritual practice and incorporate it into your life for the duration of the program • Social action - commit to helping in the community (either individually, or as a group) • Celebrate the achievement! At the end of the nine-month program, Temple Beth El will honor your journey. Participants who finish the program will receive a certificate from Chai Mitzvah and a tree planted in their name, courtesy of the Jewish National Fund's collaboration with Chai Mitzvah. The event is free and open to anyone who wants to experience Jewish holiday cooking, learn to make falafel from scratch, taste delicious goodies, learn about Hanukkah, and hear about others' family traditions. Meet in the Community Court. This is a joint program of the programming and outreach committees. In this special version of the course focused on business ethics, you'll explore some of our tradition's teachings related to business and commerce. Often, we fragment our lives into religious and secular, confining Judaism to the home and synagogue. This dichotomy between religious and work lives is alien to Judaism because derech eretz, the way we walk in this world, is a form of Jewish expression. Indeed, Jewish law and ethics have much to say about the world of business and commerce. Over 100 mitzvot relate to commerce and business, even more than the number devoted to the laws of kashrut. Chai Mitzvah has five basic components in a nine-month program: • Group study - meeting monthly, with a text-based curriculum (you can see samples of the topics at www.chaimitzvah.org, under "Curriculum" • Personal study - design your own independent study on a topic of personal interest to you, looking at Jewish life, history, major figures, literature, culture, or other areas of interest • Adopt a ritual/spiritual practice and incorporate it into your life for the duration of the program • Social action - commit to helping in the community (either individually, or as a group) • Celebrate the achievement! Indeed, Jewish law and ethics have much to say about the world of business and commerce. Over 100 mitzvot relate to commerce and business, even more than the number devoted to the laws of kashrut. Chai Mitzvah has five basic components in a nine-month program: • Group study - meeting monthly, with a text-based curriculum (you can see samples of the topics at www.chaimitzvah.org, under "Curriculum" • Personal study - design your own independent study on a topic of personal interest to you, looking at Jewish life, history, major figures, literature, culture, or other areas of interest • Adopt a ritual/spiritual practice and incorporate it into your life for the duration of the program • Social action - commit to helping in the community (either individually, or as a group) • Celebrate the achievement! At the end of the nine-month program, Temple Beth El will honor your journey. Participants who finish the program will receive a certificate from Chai Mitzvah and a tree planted in their name, courtesy of the Jewish National Fund's collaboration with Chai Mitzvah.
