Artist in Residence Galeet Dardashti on “Middle Eastern/North African Jewish Poetic Songs (Piyutim): From Pulpit to Pop Chart”

Saturday, July 16, 2022 17 Tammuz 5782

3:00 PM - 4:00 PMSanctuary

We welcome renowned performer and scholar Galeet Dardashti as our artist in residence, helping us to explore the depth and richness of Sephardi, Mizrachi, and North African Jewish musical traditions. On Saturday afternoon, Dr. Dardashti will offer a lecture on “Middle Eastern/North African Jewish Poetic Songs (Piyutim): From Pulpit to Pop Chart.”

An Iranian-descended anthropologist and performer/composer, Dardashti is a trail-blazing performer, educator, and advocate of Middle Eastern and North African Jewish culture. As a performer/composer, Dardashti is the first woman to continue her family’s tradition of distinguished Persian and Jewish musicianship. She is widely known as leader/founder of the all-woman Middle Eastern Jewish ensemble Divahn, which released its newest album, Shalhevet, in 2020. Dardashti’s scholarship examines Israeli music/media and Mizrahi cultural politics; she is currently writing a book on the Mizrahi piyyut (sacred song) phenomenon in Israel. Dardashti offers lectures, workshops, and residencies on her artistic and academic work throughout the world. Read more about her here.
