Thanksgiving Baskets Food Collection

Thursday, October 15, 2020 27 Tishrei 5781

All Day for 38 Days

Our annual Thanksgiving Food Collection is back this year with a few twists on some of our long-standing traditions:

What’s the same:

• Everyone can participate!

• Grade level competition continues (4k & kindergarteners are the defending champs). The grade that brings the most of their item will be presented with a certificate for a tree planted in Israel at song circle on December 13.

• We’re collecting the same Thanksgiving items:

  • Boxes of macaroni and cheese (4K & kindergarten)
  • Boxes of stuffing (1st grade)
  • Aluminum roaster pans (2nd grade)
  • Cans of fruit (3rd grade)
  • Cans of vegetables (4th grade)
  • Broth, any kind (5th grade)
  • Cans of cranberry sauce (6th grade)
  • Gravy (7th grade)

• Please note that anyone can donate these items and the grade will be credited for the donation, even if it was made by a family with no students in our school.

• You can bring just one item, several items, or best of all, a whole flat of cans or boxes.

• Families receiving a Thanksgiving basket are grateful to have a holiday meal to enjoy together—and our donations help make this possible.

• Our participation in this food collection is a project of the TBE Social Action Committee and the Youth Education (Religious School) Committee in partnership with Goodman Community Center.

What’s different:

• The need is greater this year, and Goodman Community Center has set a goal of 4,000 baskets—500 more than last year—to help 22,000 individuals enjoy a holiday meal.

• Second Harvest has predicted a 60% increase in food insecurity nationwide. Families of all income levels are getting hit hard because of this pandemic, and we want to do our part to help.

• Collection will not take place at Temple Beth El but as drop-offs on congregants' porches around town. All items will be collected at each drop-off site. Please wear a mask when doing contactless drop-off at these homes:

  • Sauer: 926 Sauk Ridge Trail, Madison WI 53717
  • Riley: 1 Ramsgate Circle, Madison, WI 53717
  • Staresinic: 6733 Gaylord Nelson Road, Middleton WI 53562
  • Paler: 9409 Eagle Nest Lane, Middleton WI 53562
  • Swedarsky: 1819 Rutledge Street, Madison WI 53704
  • Robbins/Friedman: 18 Chippewa Court, Madison WI 53711
  • Kassel: 2023 Range Trail, Verona WI 53593

• Don’t have time to shop or drop off items? Make a monetary donation. Donate online at goodmancenter.org/donate. On page 3 of the donation form, enter Temple Beth El (“This gift is part of the Food Drive organized by:”). Just $70 will provide a full meal for one family. Monetary donations also help purchase perishable items such as turkeys.

Last year, we collected 452 items that were added with items from other drives along with monetary donations to help Goodman Community Center reach their goal of 3,500 baskets. With a larger goal this year, we hope we can increase our contribution as well. Thanks for giving so many grateful families a holiday meal to enjoy together!
