Beyond BRCA: Genetic Screening for Various Cancers

Join us for an informative and engaging session led by a certified oncologic genetic counselor, designed to deepen your understanding of hereditary cancer risk and the role of genetic counseling in cancer prevention and care.

This event will explore how inherited gene mutations contribute to cancer, the process of genetic testing, and how personalized risk assessments can guide screening and management strategies.

Sisterhood has invited Anna Zakas, a licensed, certified UW Health genetic counselor, to guide us through the latest information about the new cutting-edge genetic testing. including:

  • What to expect if you get screened?
  • Why anyone at any age or ethnicity should get screened?
  • How screening can affect your treatment options if diagnosed with cancer.
  • What are the insurance implications?
  • What resources are available from UW and specifically for Jewish people?

Join us for a potluck from 6:00 pm where we will enjoy foods that are not only delicious but also crafted with intention—supporting physical vitality, emotional well-being, and spiritual connection.

We invite those that are able to to share a dish that is:

  • Whole-food based (minimally processed, nutrient-rich)
  • Supportive of diverse dietary needs (vegan, gluten-free, anti-inflammatory, etc.)
  • Made with love and mindfulness

The speaker will begin her presentation at 7:00 pm. 

About the speaker:

Anna Zakas, MS, MPH, CGC, is a licensed, certified UW Health genetic counselor specializing in oncology (cancer) and hematology (blood cancers and disorders). She sees patients with cancer, as well as those who have a high risk of developing cancers due to genetic and familial risk factors.

Anna works with adult patients and their family members to promote understanding of complex genetic information. She considers their condition, type of cancer, family history of cancer and health goals. She helps patients decide whether genetic testing is right for them.

As manager of the Oncology Genetic Counseling team, Anna works to ensure patient access and quality services across the state of Wisconsin. She is passionate about community outreach and genetic education.
