6:30 PM - 10:00 PMZoom

Join us as we light our Hanukkah candles together with the congregation on Zoom and then enjoy an online viewing and engaging discussion of “Almost Friends” (2014), the story of two girls—one religiously Jewish and the other Israeli-Arab—who meet online and find themselves in a surprising friendship beyond borders.

Samar, an Arab Israeli teen, and Linor, a religiously Jewish girl, meet during an online school project and are immediately drawn to each other. Samar lives in the Arab/Israeli city of Lod; Linor, in the Jewish settlement of Tlamim. Both attend Israeli schools, one solely Jewish and the other with an Arab/Jewish population. There is a good deal of familial discussion when both schools suggest the classes meet in person.

The meeting is arranged, the kids pair up, and Samar and Linor hit it off. They talk, they play and they laugh together. Difficulties develop as parents and neighbors are drawn into the picture. As the adults express their prejudices, hostilities and warped perspectives, the girls are left to themselves to sort things out. This is an innocent story from the perspective of two young girls. At the same time it offers an adult look at the seemingly endless Israeli political situation.

Directed with editing and research by Nitzan Ofir. Produced by Barak Heymann. Genre: Documentary. Run time: 1 hour 15 minutes.
