Kesher Israel Committee

Kesher means connection. The purpose of the Kesher Israel Committee of Temple Beth El is to establish and strengthen relationships between members of our congregation and members of Progressive congregations and institutions in Israel.

Through the connections we build, we exchange information and ideas, provide opportunities for visits between congregations, and explore ways to share educational experiences. A spirit of inclusion, individual autonomy, gender equity, and social justice guide these efforts.

As a committee, we:

  • have a relationship with two sister congregations: Kehilat Shir Chadash, outside Jerusalem, and congregation Emet veShalom in Nahariya.
  • share information online and provide written material in the Kesher Israel corner of the Temple library.
  • show Israeli films to acquaint us with one aspect, but not the whole, of Israeli culture. Viewing multiple movies thus broadens our understanding of Israel as a whole.
  • encourage Israel travel.
  • have mutually supportive relationships with Madison’s current shlichim (Israel emissaries).
