May 19Shavuot: Standing Under the Mountain...Then and Now
Saturday, May 19th 7:00 pm to 11:55 pm
The Madison Jewish community gathers together on the eve of Shavuot for traditional study and to develop our shared sense of community. It is customary to stay awake all night to study Torah in Tikkun Leil Shavuot. Legend has it that Israelites slept in late on the morning of the revelation on Mount Sinai, and needed to be roused from their beds. Thus, Jewish communities around the world, observe a Tikkun Leil, or “night of repair or healing” to make up for the mistake of our ancestors. We stay up late so that every part of us, both the physical and the spiritual, is prepared for the receiving of God’s covenant the next morning, during the Shavuot Torah reading. Our night of community-wide learning begins on Saturday, May 19 at 7:00pm, with a panel of Rabbis Sami Barth from Beth Israel Center, Jonathan Biatch from Temple Beth El, and Laurie Zimmerman from Congregation Shaarei Shamayim. Enjoy a special Ma’ariv service to mark the end of Shabbat and the start of Shavuot, followed by delicious dairy desserts, schmoozing, and interludes of music and poetry. After the break, there will be a series of sessions, some concurrently held to give options between text study and other kinds of experiences that will help us get out of our heads and explore our hearts and bodies. Come learn with various talented scholars and teachers from around the community. -

Madison’s Synagogues Sponsor Introduction to Judaism Course Madison rabbis and educators are joining together again this year to co-teach this cross-denominational Introduction to Judaism course. Sponsored by Congregation Shaarei Shamayim, Temple Beth El, and Beth Israel Center, we are pleased to continue this into our fourth year. We will cover a wide range of topics concerning the fundamentals of Jewish thought, history, and practice over the 16 sessions that we will spend together. Class begins on Thursday evening, January 11, and runs until May 10. It meets from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and will be held for eight sessions at Temple Beth El, 2702 Arbor Drive, and eight sessions at Beth Israel Center, 1406 Mound Street. In addition to the Thursday class sessions, we will organize special excursions around Jewish Madison. This course is open to anyone who is interested in learning about the basics of Judaism. It can stand alone as adult education course or it can serve as a pre-requisite for conversion to Judaism. Often intermarried couples take this course together. Tuition (which does not include the cost of books) is as follows: Members of a Madison synagogue: $100 per person, $175 per couple. Non-members: $150 per person, $250 per couple. We will be reading together two of the world’s earliest romance novels – the book of Ruth, and the book of Esther; explore Biblical poetry through the Psalms and the wisdom of Prophets; and wrestle, along with Job, with some of the most difficult questions faced by people of faith – why do bad things happen to good people, and why, if God is all-powerful and all-good, is such suffering allowed to take place?

Undergraduate or Graduate students: $50. We have a twelve student minimum for the class to happen. Scholarships are available.
