Sagashus Levingston Presentation and Discussion

Sunday, June 24, 2018 • 11 Tammuz 5778

7:00 PM - 9:00 PMSocial Hall

Sagashus Levingston, our guest speaker, is a business owner, PhD candidate, and author of an important new book, Infamous Mothers. In her words, The criminalization of impoverished black mothers is a norm in our society. Without thought, many of us say things like, “Teen pregnancy is the reason for poverty.” This often translates to black or poor youth are the reason for poverty. We say things like, “The people having the most children (read as black women) are the least capable of taking care of them.” As a society, we have come to accept these generalized, negative ideas about marginalized single moms. In our time together, I would like to explore some of these beliefs. Through stories and open dialogue, we will identify stereotypes, challenge ourselves, and talk about larger social issues that help us understand, in more just and complex ways, the moms our society loves to hate. These are “women who’ve gone through the belly of hell...and brought something good back.” Join me as I connect with you over stories of Infamous Mothers and the context around their narratives. But more importantly, join me so that we can build community and alliances.

The program will be lively, stimulating, and engaging.
